Rank is among all 392 scored models, so it skips numbers when the table is filtered. Score: out of 100 against cars of the same age and annual mileage, 50 being as expected, with the 95% range beneath it. Normal MOT tests of cars aged three and over in Great Britain, 2025. Same ages: what all cars would score with this model’s mix of ages. Average age at the test. Dangerous: tests that found at least one dangerous defect. Main fuel is the most common fuel among those licensed.

Most reliable car makes

Every model of each make counted together, with at least 5,000 tests. The Reliability Score is worked out per model, not per make, so makes are compared on the age-adjusted pass rate. A make’s figure is mostly its best-selling models.

Best and worst by class

For the models we have classed (city car, supermini, family SUV and so on), the highest and lowest scoring in each class. Classes are our labels, not DVLA’s, and cover 64 scored models.

Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric

By the fuel DVSA records for each car tested. Electric and hybrid cars are mostly young, so their high raw pass rates largely reflect age; against cars of the same ages the gaps are small. Hybrids include plug-in hybrids.

How the ranking works

The ranking is the UK Motoring Reliability Score: how often a model fails its MOT and how often a tester finds a dangerous defect, each against what cars of the same age and annual mileage record. 50 is exactly as expected, higher is better, and the 95% range is shown with every score. Failure rate counts for three quarters of it and dangerous defects for the remaining quarter.

Mileage matters as much as age. A car that covers 3,000 miles a year should fail less often than one covering 15,000, so standardising on age alone would reward cars that barely move. Annual mileage comes from consecutive MOT odometer readings, which is why 99 models here have a pass rate but no score: too few of their tests could be paired to measure it.

The pass rate is still in the table, against what all cars of the same ages score, because it is the figure people know. A first-time pass means the car passed its normal MOT with no defects to fix; a pass after a repair at the test station counts as a failure, and retests are left out.

The score measures the condition of cars on the road, which is the product of how they were built and how they have been kept. Expensive cars are maintained more thoroughly, and they fill the top of the table accordingly. What the score does not measure is breakdowns, warranty claims, or what a repair costs.

  • Normal MOT tests of cars aged three and over in Great Britain, 2025. Retests are excluded.
  • A model needs 2,000 tests with a measured annual mileage before it is scored, and a 95% range no wider than five points either side. 99 models here fall short and show a pass rate only.
  • DVSA records the model name typed in at the test; we match those names to DVLA’s generic models. Models whose tests are mixed with vans of the same name are left out.
