How much of a litre is tax?

Tax makes up 48.2% of the price of a litre of petrol and 44.4% of diesel. Fuel duty is a flat 52.95p a litre (unchanged since March 2022), and VAT at 20.0% is charged on top of the duty as well as the fuel.

Petrol, 168.1p a litre

Diesel, 190.7p a litre

“Fuel, delivery and retail margin” is what is left once duty and VAT are taken off the pump price. DESNZ does not split it further.

  • Unleaded petrol is ultra low sulphur petrol (ULSP) and diesel is ultra low sulphur diesel (ULSD). Prices include duty and VAT.
  • Tank cost is for a 55-litre tank, to illustrate; tanks vary by car.
