How many Mercedes-Benz E-Classes are left in Great Britain?

There were 203,182 Mercedes-Benz E-Classes licensed in Great Britain at the end of March 2026, and a further 40,576 declared off the road (SORN). That is 18.9% fewer than the peak of 250,483 in 2019.

Most common Mercedes-Benz E-Class MOT defects and advisories

The single most common reason a Mercedes-Benz E-Class failed its MOT in 2025 was “Tyres: tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm”, on 10.8% of 52,089 failed tests. 47.4% of tests ended with at least one advisory, a problem to watch that did not fail the test; the most common was “Tread depth: worn close to legal limit or worn on edge”. The same fault on any wheel or side counts once.

Of the 213,236 Mercedes-Benz E-Classes licensed in the UK at the end of 2025, 37.7% have an engine of 1,901cc to 2,000cc, and 37.3% have an engine of 2,101cc to 2,200cc. The share with an engine of 1,901cc to 2,000cc has grown from 2.7% in 2014 to 37.7%. Petrols made up 16.3% of those licensed in 2014 and 9.2% in 2025.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class fuel economy and CO2

The Vehicle Certification Agency’s new car data lists the Mercedes-Benz E-Class from 2000, when the data begins, and still lists it. On the WLTP test (listings 2020 to 2026), official combined fuel economy for its petrol, diesel, petrol hybrid and diesel hybrid versions ranges from 22.4 to 60.1 mpg, with CO2 of 122 to 286 g/km; plug-in hybrid versions are rated at 80.7 to 706.3 mpg (weighted). On the older NEDC test (listings 2000 to 2018), official combined fuel economy for its petrol, diesel, petrol hybrid and diesel hybrid versions ranges from 19.5 to 72.4 mpg, with CO2 of 102 to 345 g/km; plug-in hybrid versions are rated at 113.0 to 135.0 mpg (weighted).

  • Official figures from laboratory type-approval tests. VCA says they may not be achieved in real-world driving, and should not be used to rank cars with similar figures.

Defect
Mercedes-Benz AG has determined that on certain GLE/GLS (167 platform) C-Class (205 platform) E-Class (213 platform) S-Class (223 platform) GLC (253 platform) and CLS (257 platform) vehicles with diesel engine the vacuum‑controlled coolant pump might exhibit a leakage between the vacuum system and the coolant circuit.
Remedy
As a remedy Mercedes-Benz AG via its Mercedes-Benz service partners will update the software of the coolant pump and replace the electrical switch valve on the affected vehicles.
