Why UK Motoring exists
Government departments publish a remarkable amount of motoring data: the result of every MOT test, every licensed vehicle, traffic counts on every major road, every police-reported collision and, since the Fuel Finder scheme began, the price at almost every filling station. Most of it sits in spreadsheets and bulk files that few people ever open.
UK Motoring turns that data into clear pages for drivers, car buyers, journalists and researchers. How many of a car are left on the road. How it does at its MOT, and what usually fails. How busy a road is, and where the roadworks are. Where the cheapest fuel is today. How your area compares. And, on every page, where each figure came from and when.

Where our data comes from
Almost everything on UK Motoring comes from official statistics and open data, used under their licences (mostly the Open Government Licence). Our figures come from:

- Fuel Finder statutory scheme
- Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

- OpenStreetMap contributors
- Open Charge Map contributors

Every page names its sources. The data sources page lists each dataset, and data attribution gives the licence and credit for each.
How we keep it accurate
- Sourced and dated. Every figure shows where it came from, the period it covers and when we last updated it.
- Checked before it is published. Each refresh is checked for gaps and values that can’t be right before it replaces what is on the site.
- Only strong pages. We publish a page only when the data behind it is strong enough to be useful. Our methodology explains how every figure is worked out.
- Corrected quickly. If a figure looks wrong, please tell us: we check it against the source and fix our pages if we have made a mistake.

UK Motoring is not part of any government body, car maker, dealer or insurer. The data and tools are free to use.
- Insurance comparison. Some pages offer a link to compare car insurance quotes on SimplyQuote.co.uk. If you buy a policy there, we may earn a commission. It never changes our figures or rankings.
- Vehicle reports. Detailed reports on a particular car will be paid for; the free check and our example reports show exactly what each includes.
- No sponsored rankings. No one can pay to change a ranking, a table or a figure on UK Motoring.
- We don’t sell your data. Details you give us are used only for what you asked for; our privacy notice explains exactly how.
