How many Mercedes-Benz A-Classes are left in Great Britain?

There were 378,826 Mercedes-Benz A-Classes licensed in Great Britain at the end of March 2026, and a further 13,892 declared off the road (SORN). That is the most on the road at any year end since 1998.

Most common Mercedes-Benz A-Class MOT defects and advisories

The single most common reason a Mercedes-Benz A-Class failed its MOT in 2025 was “Coil spring: fractured or broken”, on 12.1% of 78,847 failed tests. 44.4% of tests ended with at least one advisory, a problem to watch that did not fail the test; the most common was “Tread depth: worn close to legal limit or worn on edge”. The same fault on any wheel or side counts once.

Of the 390,420 Mercedes-Benz A-Classes licensed in the UK at the end of 2025, 35.6% have an engine of 1,301cc to 1,400cc, and 32.1% have an engine of 1,401cc to 1,500cc. The share with an engine of 1,301cc to 1,400cc has grown from 16.5% in 2014 to 35.6%. Petrols made up 60.3% of those licensed in 2014 and 40.7% in 2025.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class fuel economy and CO2

The Vehicle Certification Agency’s new car data lists the Mercedes-Benz A-Class from 2000, when the data begins, and still lists it. On the WLTP test (listings 2020 to 2026), official combined fuel economy for its petrol, diesel and petrol hybrid versions ranges from 30.7 to 64.2 mpg, with CO2 of 115 to 208 g/km; plug-in hybrid versions are rated at 100.9 to 403.6 mpg (weighted). On the older NEDC test (listings 2000 to 2018), official combined fuel economy for its petrol and diesel versions ranges from 29.4 to 80.7 mpg, with CO2 of 89 to 224 g/km.

  • Official figures from laboratory type-approval tests. VCA says they may not be achieved in real-world driving, and should not be used to rank cars with similar figures.

Defect
Mercedes-Benz AG has determined that on certain CLA (174 platform) A-Class (177 platform) and GLA (247 platform) vehicles the bowden cable of the release mechanism of one or more doors might not have been properly mounted.
Remedy
As a precautionary measure Mercedes-Benz AG via its Mercedes-Benz service partners will check the bowden cables of the doors on the affected vehicles and mount them correctly if necessary.
