Who we are

UK Motoring (ukmotoring.co.uk) is run by Simply Quote Comparison Ltd, the company behind SimplyQuote.co.uk. We are the data controller for the personal information described in this notice, which means we decide how it is used and are responsible for looking after it.

In this notice, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Simply Quote Comparison Ltd.

Summary

You can use UK Motoring without telling us who you are. We only hold personal information when you sign in, sign up for an email or reminder, or contact us. We never sell it.

Using the website

Searches and tool inputs, such as a postcode, town or car model, are used to show you results and are not stored against you. The fuel finder and charger finder work in your browser: the postcode or town you search for, and your location if you choose to share it, are not sent to us.

Like any website, our hosting provider receives technical information when you visit, including your IP address, browser type and the pages requested. It is used to deliver the site, keep it secure and investigate faults. We do not use it to identify you.

Analytics. We use Ahrefs Web Analytics to count visits and see which pages are useful. It sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. When a page loads, it sends Ahrefs the page address, the website that referred you, your screen size and browser language, and, as with any web request, your IP address. We only see totals, such as visits per page, not individual visitors. You can stop it with a content blocker or by blocking analytics.ahrefs.com.

Google Analytics. If you accept analytics cookies, we also use Google Analytics 4 to understand how people move through the site. It records the pages you view and when, the website or search that brought you here, and your device, browser and language. It gives your browser a random identifier so that several pages viewed in a row are counted as one visit. That identifier is not your name or email address, and we never send Google anything you have typed into My Garage or our forms.

Your IP address is used to work out your approximate location, at around city level, and is then discarded: Google does not log or store it for us. We see reports of totals and trends, not a list of individuals. We keep this data for 14 months, after which Google deletes it.

Our lawful basis is your consent, which you give with the Accept button on the cookie banner. Nothing is collected by Google Analytics before you accept. You can withdraw consent at any time from cookie settings or the Cookie settings link at the foot of every page, and withdrawing does not affect anything collected beforehand. Google is our processor for this, acting on our instructions, and may process the data outside the UK under the transfer safeguards in its terms. You can also block it for every website with Google's opt-out browser add-on or a content blocker. What this sets in your browser is listed in our cookie policy.

Microsoft Clarity. If you accept analytics cookies, we also use Microsoft Clarity to see how pages are actually used. Unlike the tools above, Clarity records your visit: the pages you open, how far you scroll, where you move the pointer and what you click, so we can replay it and find where the site is confusing or broken. It also records your device, browser, approximate location and the page that referred you.

What it does not record: what you type. Clarity masks the contents of form fields before anything leaves your browser, so email addresses, registrations and messages are not captured. We go further and do not load Clarity at all on the pages that show your own details or take them from you (/my-garage/, /account/, /contact/), so nothing you do there is ever recorded.

Our lawful basis is your consent, the same Accept that covers Google Analytics. Clarity is not placed on the page at all until you accept, so nothing is recorded beforehand, and you can withdraw at any time from cookie settings. Microsoft is our processor for this and may process the data outside the UK under the transfer safeguards in its terms. Clarity and Google Analytics are linked, so a visit counted in one can be matched to the recording of the same visit in the other. Recordings are kept for 30 days and then deleted. What Clarity stores in your browser is listed in our cookie policy.

The charger map loads its map images from OpenStreetMap’s tile servers, which receive your IP address to send the images, under the OpenStreetMap Foundation’s privacy policy.

Signing in and My Garage

There are no passwords. When you sign in, we email you a link and a code that work once, for 15 minutes. We keep:

• your email address, and your name if you choose to give it;
• when your account was created and when you last signed in;
• for each device you are signed in on: a session record, your browser type and a scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address, used to protect your account;
• the emails, reminders and postcodes you have set up.

We use this to provide My Garage and to keep your account secure (lawful basis: contract, as it is the service you asked for; and legitimate interests, for security). If you never confirm your email address, we delete it after 7 days.

Weekly fuel price email

If you sign up for our weekly email of the cheapest fuel within 10 miles of your postcode, the sign-up form says: “We’ll use your email address and postcode to send you a weekly UK Motoring email. You can unsubscribe at any time.” We keep:

• your email address and the postcode or postcodes you choose;
• when and on which page you signed up, when you confirmed your email address, and the wording you agreed to;
• a record of each weekly email we send you, including the local average prices in it, so the next email can say how prices moved.

Each weekly email also includes a short section about comparing car insurance on SimplyQuote.co.uk (see offers and marketing). We send a link to confirm your email address before the first email. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email, or in My Garage, where you can also change your postcode or add another.

Insurance renewal reminder

If you tick “Remind me when my car insurance renewal is due (optional)”, we keep your email address, the month your car insurance renews, and when and where you asked, with the wording you agreed to. We email you once a year, four weeks before that month, with a link to compare car insurance quotes on SimplyQuote.co.uk.

Because the reminder promotes insurance comparison, it is marketing, and our lawful basis is your consent. It is separate from any other email: you can stop it at any time with the unsubscribe link in the reminder, or in My Garage, without affecting anything else.

Offers and marketing

UK Motoring is part of the SimplyQuote family. With your permission, we may email you about products and services that people who own or run a vehicle are likely to be interested in, from UK Motoring and SimplyQuote.co.uk, including:

• car, van and motorbike insurance, and home insurance;
• breakdown cover, extended warranties and other motoring protection;
• car finance and leasing;
• other products and services related to buying, owning or running a vehicle.

These offers may appear in their own emails or as part of our other emails.

We only send marketing emails with your permission, and we record what you agreed to and when. The weekly UK Motoring email includes a short section about comparing car insurance on SimplyQuote.co.uk; you can stop it with the unsubscribe link in each email. You can opt out of marketing at any time with the unsubscribe link in any marketing email, in My Garage, or by emailing hello@ukmotoring.co.uk, and we will stop.

We do not pass your details to other companies for their own marketing. We may use your postcode area, the car details you give us and which emails you have signed up for to decide which offers are relevant to you; we do not make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects.

Vehicle check and insurance search

A registration number on its own does not identify you, but it can be linked to a vehicle’s keeper, so we treat it carefully.

• Vehicle check: when checks by registration are available, the registration you enter is sent to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency to look up the vehicle’s details and MOT history, and the results are shown to you. We do not store the registration against you.
• Insurance search: if you enter a registration to compare insurance, we pass it to SimplyQuote.co.uk so the quote form can look up your car. From then on, SimplyQuote.co.uk and its comparison partner Quotezone (Seopa Ltd) handle your quote under their own privacy notices. Links to SimplyQuote also carry which page you came from, so we can see which pages are useful; they carry nothing that identifies you.

Contact form

If you send us a message, we keep your name (if you give it), email address, what the message is about, the message and the page you came from. We use them only to reply to you (lawful basis: legitimate interests in answering your enquiry), keep them for 12 months and don’t add you to any email list.

How our emails work

• Our email provider tells us whether each email was delivered, delayed, bounced or reported as spam. We use this to keep our emails working and to stop emailing addresses that don’t work or don’t want our emails.
• We do not track whether you open our emails or click links in them. Our emails contain no tracking pixels.
• Every fuel price email, reminder and marketing email has an unsubscribe link, including a one-click unsubscribe that email apps can show.
• If an email to you bounces permanently or is reported as spam, we keep a scrambled (hashed) form of your address on a do-not-email list, so we never email it again by mistake.

Who we share information with

We use trusted providers to run UK Motoring. They act only on our instructions, under data processing terms, and may not use your information for their own purposes:

• Vercel: hosts the website and runs our servers.
• Neon: our database, holding account, email and consent records, in its London (UK) region.
• Resend: sends our emails.
• Microsoft: our email inbox, where contact form messages, notices of new sign-ups and replies to our emails arrive.
• Ahrefs: website analytics, as described under using the website.
• GitHub: stores our code and runs our data updates; it holds no visitor information.

We may also share information:

• with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, as described under vehicle check;
• with the police, regulators or courts where the law requires it, or to protect the rights, safety or property of our users or others;
• with a buyer or successor if our business, or part of it, is sold or reorganised, who would have to use it in line with this notice.

We never sell personal information.

Information stored outside the UK

Our database is in the UK. Some providers, such as Vercel and Resend, are based in the United States and may process information there. Where that happens, it is protected by the safeguards UK data protection law requires, such as the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the International Data Transfer Agreement approved by the Information Commissioner.

How long we keep information

• Sign-in links and codes: 15 minutes (confirmation links 24 hours), deleted after a day.
• Signed-in sessions: 30 days after you last use the site on that device.
• Email addresses that were never confirmed or used: 7 days.
• Account details, postcodes and reminders: while you have them set up.
• Records of what you agreed to and when you stopped: up to 6 years, as evidence that we emailed you lawfully.
• Records of emails we sent: 13 months; the email address on each record is removed after 30 days.
• Contact form messages: 12 months.
• IP addresses used to stop abuse (such as too many sign-in attempts): up to a day.
• Do-not-email list (scrambled addresses): kept, so we never email those addresses again.

If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your details and settings. We keep only what we must: the consent records above, with your details removed where possible, and your scrambled address on the do-not-email list if you ask us never to contact you.

Keeping information safe

Information is encrypted in transit, and access is limited to the people and systems that need it. Sign-in links, codes and session identifiers are stored only in scrambled (hashed) form, so they can’t be used even by someone who sees the database. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach puts your information at risk, we will tell you and the Information Commissioner’s Office as the law requires.

Cookies and browser storage

• Sign-in cookie: when you sign in, we set one cookie ( __Host-ukm_session) that keeps you signed in for up to 30 days. It is strictly necessary for My Garage, so it doesn’t need your consent, and it is removed when you sign out.
• Browser storage: your recent searches are kept in your browser so they appear in the search box, and a registration you enter for a vehicle check is kept for that browser tab while the report loads. Neither is sent to us, and you can clear them by clearing site data in your browser.
• We don’t use advertising cookies or analytics cookies: our analytics is cookieless. If that changes, we will update this notice and ask for your consent first where the law requires it.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

• get a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
• have inaccurate information corrected;
• have your information deleted;
• restrict how we use it, or object to our using it;
• object to direct marketing at any time, in which case we will stop;
• receive information you gave us in a portable format;
• withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting what we did before.

To use any of these rights, email hello@ukmotoring.co.uk or use our contact form and choose “My data or privacy”. We may ask you to confirm your identity, usually by replying from the email address we hold. We reply within one month, and there is normally no charge. You can stop any of our emails yourself, straight away, with the unsubscribe link in the email or in My Garage.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, or 0303 123 1113.

Children

UK Motoring’s emails, reminders and My Garage are for adults. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16; if you think we have, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this notice

We will update this notice when how we use information changes, and change the date at the top. If a change affects how we use information you have already given us, we will tell you by email before it takes effect.
