Roadworks and road closures
What is closed and what is being dug up, from the two registers that publish it: National Highways' planned closures on England's motorways and trunk A-roads, and every road in the Scottish Road Works Register. They do not cover the same roads, so the figures are kept apart.
- England: planned closures 2,304 next fortnight, 100 roads
- England: closing a carriageway 1,000 43.4% of them
- England: starting overnight 2,021 between 7pm and 6am
- Scotland: sets of roadworks 22,074 every road, 32 councils
- Scotland: under way now 5,092 23.1% of them
- Scotland: closing a road or lane 7,729 35.0% of them
Closures on England's motorways and trunk A-roads
National Highways has 2,304 planned closures on the roads it manages between 16 September 2026 and 30 September 2026, on 100 roads. 1,000 close a carriageway rather than a lane or slip road, and 2,021 start between 7pm and 6am. This covers motorways and trunk A-roads only: roadworks on England's council roads are not published in a form we can use yet.

How many roadworks are there in Scotland?
The Scottish Road Works Register held 22,074 sets of roadworks on 16 September 2026. 5,092 were under way and 16,982 were recorded but had not started. 7,729 of them close a road, a lane, a slip road or the hard shoulder, and 2,739 are on the trunk roads Transport Scotland looks after. Edinburgh has the most of any council, 2,378.
How traffic is managed
Most sets of works keep traffic moving with lights or give-and-take, but road closures are the single most common arrangement.

| Give and take | 4,589 |
| Footway only | 1,562 |

Roads with the most works
Works are matched to a road when the register's street name starts with the road number, so these counts are the ones we can be sure of. 188 roads have at least one.

Who is digging up Scotland's roads?
BT is behind more sets of works than anyone else, 3,796 of them. Councils record their own works as well as the utilities' works on their roads, and of the promoters that are neither a council nor Transport Scotland, BT has the most, 3,796.

- The two registers do not cover the same thing. England’s figures are National Highways’ planned closures on the motorways and trunk A-roads it manages; Scotland’s are every set of works on every road, down to a residential street. Do not read one as bigger or smaller than the other.
- Roadworks on England’s council roads are recorded in DfT’s Street Manager, which sends events to a subscriber’s own server rather than publishing a file, and Wales publishes its own data. Neither is connected yet.
- England: planned closures only, not closures caused by incidents, which change too quickly for a page built a few times a day. A closure that has finished stays in the feed for a week, so we leave out any whose end time has passed.
- The register publishes one extract a day, so works can start, finish or change after it is taken.
- Potential works (an early notice that something may happen) and plant enquiries are left out. Works are under way when the register’s status is In Progress or Commenced.
- A closure means traffic management that closes a road, a lane, a slip road or the hard shoulder, or runs a contraflow.
- Dates, descriptions and traffic management are recorded by whoever is doing the work. The register says it does not guarantee the files are free of errors.
