Solo has the cheapest average unleaded of the major brands at 160.7p a litre, and Shell the dearest at 173.4p. The UK average across all 8,148 forecourts checked 4 Nov, 13:15 is 170.7p for unleaded and 198.5p for diesel.

Major brands here are those with 50 or more forecourts, so a handful of sites cannot set the record. Prices are the ones each forecourt reported to Fuel Finder, not a national list price, and they move daily.

Supermarket forecourts average 168.4p for unleaded across 2,332 sites, against 170.9p at the other 5,656 forecourts, and 191.4p at the 168 motorway service areas.

A brand's average also depends on where its forecourts are: a brand with many motorway or rural sites will look dearer than one concentrated in towns.
