Maxol has the cheapest average unleaded of the major brands at 166.4p a litre, and Shell the dearest at 175.5p. The UK average across all 8,072 forecourts checked 17 Sept, 16:48 is 172.0p for unleaded and 195.2p for diesel.

Major brands here are those with 50 or more forecourts, so a handful of sites cannot set the record. Prices are the ones each forecourt reported to Fuel Finder, not a national list price, and they move daily.

Supermarket forecourts average 169.0p for unleaded across 2,308 sites, against 172.8p at the other 5,604 forecourts, and 190.6p at the 168 motorway service areas.

A brand's average also depends on where its forecourts are: a brand with many motorway or rural sites will look dearer than one concentrated in towns.
