Where is the cheapest petrol in the UK right now?
Average petrol and diesel prices by area, how much prices vary between nearby filling stations, and why supermarket forecourts usually undercut motorway services.

Since the statutory Fuel Finder scheme began, filling stations across the UK have had to report their pump prices. That makes it possible to compare prices by area rather than relying on a handful of sampled forecourts.
The national picture
In the week to 7 September 2026 the average price of a litre of unleaded petrol was 134.8p, down 1.9p on a month earlier. Diesel averaged 141.9p. The gap between the two fuels has stayed at about 7p a litre through the summer.
Why nearby stations charge different prices
Location matters less than the type of forecourt. Across every area we looked at, the pattern is the same:
- Supermarket forecourts are usually the cheapest in any town.
- Independent and branded stations in towns sit in the middle.
- Motorway service areas charge the most, often 15p to 20p a litre above the local average.
A driver filling a 50-litre tank can save several pounds by choosing where to stop.
How we calculate averages
We use each station’s latest reported price and give every station equal weight, so a large supermarket counts the same as a village garage. Stations that have not updated their price in the past seven days are left out. See the methodology for details.
