Road rankings
Collision rates by road
Police-reported collisions on each motorway and A-road from 2021 to 2025, set against the traffic on it, so busy roads are compared fairly with quiet ones.
Across Great Britain there were 4.9 collisions per 100 million vehicle miles on motorways, 31.5 on A-roads and 47.8 on minor roads. Among the 515 roads with enough data, the highest rate is on the A105 (324.3), and the highest for a motorway on the M621 (10.5). 10 of the 10 A-roads with the highest rates are wholly or mostly in London.
A-roads with the highest collision rates
Collisions per 100 million vehicle miles, 2021 to 2025, for A-roads of 10 miles or more with at least 50 collisions.

Most collisions per mile of road
Collisions a year for each mile of A-road, 2021 to 2025. This measures how many happen along a road, not the risk to each driver: busy roads score high. The A503 has 19.8 a year per mile.

- Roads qualify with at least 10 miles and 50 collisions over the period, so a handful of collisions cannot put a short road at the top.
- A collision counts for a road when police record it as the first road. Collisions at junctions where the road is the second road are left out.
- Rates divide collisions by the vehicle miles DfT estimates for the same road and years.
- STATS19 covers injury collisions reported to the police; damage-only collisions are not included.
- Fatal or serious uses DfT’s adjusted serious figures.
