39,539 battery electric cars were licensed in the West Midlands metropolitan county at the end of March 2026, 3.1% of all cars. With plug-in hybrids, 64,436 cars plug in. A year earlier there were 28,409.

Of the privately kept cars, which are registered at home addresses, 2.0% are battery electric (23,617 cars). Companies keep 40.3% of the area’s battery electric cars, against 7.4% of its cars overall. There are also 11,582 battery electric vans.
