Charging speeds and connectors
Speeds
- Slow, under 7 kW: best overnight, often a three-pin plug.
- Fast, 7 to 22 kW: a few hours, usually Type 2 on street or at car parks.
- Rapid, 25 to 99 kW: a useful top-up in under an hour, often much less.
- Ultra-rapid, 100 kW or more: mostly at motorway services and charging hubs.
How fast a car actually charges also depends on the car: it takes the lower of the charger’s power and its own limit.
Connectors
- Type 2: the standard UK and European plug for slower AC charging.
- CCS: rapid DC charging for most electric cars sold today.
- CHAdeMO: rapid DC charging for some older cars, such as the first Nissan Leaf.
- Tesla: Tesla Superchargers; many now also have CCS for other makes.
About this data
The finder uses public charging sites from Open Charge Map and OpenStreetMap, updated every day. Each result is a charging site, which may have several chargers. For comparison, the Department for Transport counted 121,171 public charging devices in the UK; open data does not cover every site yet, and some sites don’t record their connectors or speed. Check availability and prices with the operator before you set off.
